Grandes Momentos do Rock \\ PHILIP ANSELMO And SLAYER Perform PANTERA Classic In Greece

Philip Anselmo (DOWN, PANTERA) celebrated his 45th birthday by joining SLAYER on stage last night (Monday, July 1) at the Heavy By The Sea festival in Athens, Greece to perform the PANTERA classic "Fucking Hostile". Fan-filmed video footage of his appearance can be seen below.

In the last couple of years, Anselmo and SLAYER guitarist Kerry King have taken part in several installments of the "Metal Masters" clinic series, during which they have played a number of PANTERA songs alongside select cuts from SLAYER.

Speaking to Artisan News, King stated about "Metal Masters": "The reason I still do it to this day is to get Phil involved, because I think the world misses him. He's good at what he does and I'm one of the few guys he looks up to to the point where he'd come out and do it. And I'm not blowing sunshine up my ass; it's just a fact. And everybody wants to see Phil. Everybody loves Phil. When I come out, it's a huge applause. When Phil comes out, it's like somebody came back from the dead; they're not expecting it. And it's cool."

In a recent interview with Full Metal Jackie, Anselmo stated about performing PANTERA songs at "Metal Masters": "I'm up there with guys that I've known since the '80s who have a good five, six years on me of playing music and being successful, people that I looked up to and still look up to… The thing is just being up there with those guys is overwhelming enough, but then playing the PANTERA songs, don't get me wrong, it feels great, it feels fantastic, and it does bring me back to a very powerful place, a very unique place in history. I guess, growing up and cuttin' my chops and growing up with the guys in PANTERA, and we always played with a chip on our shoulder and you get that rush of memory when you're up there doing it, but it's a lot of emotions balled up into one, but they're all pretty damn good. For me, the most fun thing about it of all is just seeing the fan reaction. I've always said that PANTERA fans were the best in the world, and I truly meant that and I still mean it. That's why 'Metal Masters' keeps the pulse of the whole thing going."

Asked by France's Radio Metal in a recent interview if he is fed up having to answer questions about the possibility of a PANTERA reunion with Zakk Wylde (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, OZZY OSBOURNE) filling in for the late "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott on guitar, Anselmo said: "I'm not fed up with it. I understand the…. I understand. I'm a music fan myself. I love music. I love bands, I love collecting music. And for your average fan out there, if you're a PANTERA fan, of course, you want to see it. And, really, if you think about it, our career was pretty short. And here we are in 2013 and we're still talking about PANTERA. Obviously there's a great strength there, obviously there's a great memory there. But as far as us reforming or anything like that, the only thing… Look, I've said it in the past… It's not a very hopeful thing to think about, because I would guess Vinnie Paul [Abbott, former PANTERA drummer and Dimebag's brother] and I would have to sit down and talk, and right now, I don't think he wants to talk about that at all. And he definitely, sure as hell, doesn't wanna talk to me. Put it this way: my door is open always; his door is closed and locked. And until we can sort the situation out — if we can ever sort the situation out — then I would pretty much forget about a PANTERA reunion."

O músico também comentou sobre como veio a ideia pro livro, sua atual relação com os membros sobreviventes do Pantera, sua vida de pai, e como é trabalhar com o lendário baterista Vinny Appice.

Perguntado sobre sua atual relação com o vocalista do Pantera PHILLIP ANSELMO e o baterista VINNIE PAUL ABBOTT, Rex disse: “Eu mandei meu livro para os dois. E, aparentemente, Vinnie não ficou muito lisonjeado com ele. Vinnie então que escreva a sua própria porra de livro. Com o Phillip, eu não ouvi nenhuma contestação, mas eu não disse nada no livro que já não fosse público, entende?”

Na página 172 de “Official Truth, 101 Proof: The Inside Story Of Pantera”, Rex tinha o seguinte a dizer sobre Vinnie Paul: “Você precisa entender que Vinnie é simplesmente uma pessoa estranha – simples assim – e ou é do jeito dele, ou não tem acordo. Eu acho que ele herdou a maior parte dessa cuzice do pai dele, porque, sob vários aspectos, eles eram muito parecidos. Com Vinnie era sempre ‘farra, farra, farra’ e ‘chupa aquela buceta! ’, essas coisas – ao ponto que ele achou que era a porra do DAVID LEE ROTH. E ele, como baterista, você consegue imaginar isso? Mas a verdade é que ele só comia alguém talvez em uma dentre dez vezes e isso se ele desse sorte. Estar em uma banda multiplatinada é pra ser um adianto quando você está xavecando uma mulher, mas ele anulava isso ao não ter noção nenhuma de como tratar ou abordar uma mulher. Ele só ia até elas e começava imediatamente a boliná-las, então não era de se surpreender que o índice de conquistas dele ser tão digno de pena. Ele agia como se conhecê-lo fosse uma avaliação sexual e isso as assustava de cara”.
Ele continua: “E como se isso já não fosse ruim o suficiente, quando ele não descolava ninguém [noventa por cento das vezes, pelos meus cálculos] ele era o cara mais infeliz do planeta. Eu não suportava viver com ele. Ele entrava na sala de manhã e eu já sabia. Ele estava todo tenso e puto com todo mundo e não havia nada que ninguém pudesse fazer para mudar o humor dele. Isso ficou muito chato.”

Rex: “De jeito nenhum. Eu acho que é meio engraçado, de uma maneira estranha. Quem você vai chamar pra substituir Dime? Quem vai conseguir tocar do jeito que ele tocava? Há muitos guitarristas por aí, e temos várias ofertas, mas até que as coisas sejam águas passadas entre Phil e Vinnie, eu não sei. Permita-me dizer isso também: Phillip e eu estamos de braços abertos. Só depende de Vinnie se ele quiser seguir em frente e fazer algo assim, mas eu não vejo isso acontecendo tão cedo.”

Anselmo também insiste que ele teria reparado seu relacionamento com Dimebag. "Gostaria de ter feito as pazes com ele. Eu queria que ele tivesse orgulho de mim por eu ter conseguido sair da lama, deste abismo", disse o vocalista. "Eu escolhi lembrar das coisas positivas. Ele era quase como um contraponto perfeito para mim. Podemos ter nos enfrentado de certa forma, mas nós sempre encontrávamos um meio termo. Era um relacionamento vital, que para mim, foi uma perda gravíssima".

Premiere\\ PANTERA: 'Piss' Video Released

While combing the PANTERA vaults for the 20th anniversary reissue of "Vulgar Display Of Power", drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott made an astounding discovery: "Piss", an incendiary blast of vintage PANTERA from the original recording sessions that had long been forgotten. After 20 years, "Piss" finally made its debut yesterday (Wednesday, April 11), when the newly created video for the song premiered at the Revolver Golden Gods awards in Los Angeles, which was broadcast live on Xbox Live, as well as on the Xbox and Revolver Facebook pages. The song was then released to radio outlets and all digital music retailers. PANTERA is also the subject of a Revolver special issue, which hits newsstands everywhere on April 15.

For the "Piss" video, PANTERA, which can be seen below, put out a call through their Facebook page for fans to submit home videos of them rocking out to the band or attend a video shoot in Los Angeles. The resulting video is an amazing collection of fans of all ages, from around the world, moshing, jumping, punching, kicking, and just plain rocking out to PANTERA. The video, directed by Zach Merck, also features some amazing slow-motion shots that recreate the face punch from the iconic cover of "Vulgar Display Of Power".

"'Piss' is the only unheard complete PANTERA track in existence, "said Vinnie. "It was recorded at the same time as 'Vulgar Display Of Power' and it's 100 percent PANTERA with attitude and our signature groove! After mixing it, I can't believe it didn't make the record! So it's 2012 and 20 years later and new PANTERA music has been delivered."

In anticipation of the reissue of one of the greatest metal albums of all time, PANTERA's 1992 masterpiece "Vulgar Display Of Power", Revolver magazine has created a PANTERA special issue, which includes the whole story of the band, an in-depth look at the making of "Vulgar", fallen guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott's final interview, and more.

Revolver will host a release party for the issue on April 12 at the Key Club in West Hollywood, California. Plus, cover illustrator Tim Bradstreet will be on hand to sign copies of the issue. Providing the soundtrack for the evening will be members of SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX, ADRENALINE MOB, and some very special guests, who will all be putting on the "Metal Masters 3" clinic for musicians, presented by Samson, Zoom, and Hartke.

February 25 marked the 20-year anniversary for PANTERA's "Vulgar Display Of Power", a landmark album widely acknowledged as one of metal's most enduring and influential masterworks. Recorded by singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, the album has been certified double platinum by the RIAA and features several of the group's most iconic songs including "Walk", "Mouth For War", "This Love" and "Fucking Hostile".

To celebrate, Rhino channels the album's relentless blitzkrieg of musical aggression onto a two-disc Deluxe Edition. The CD includes the original album remastered and "Piss", a recently discovered unreleased track from the recording sessions. The DVD contains an unreleased live performance filmed in Italy in September of 1992 plus the three official music videos from the album.

Due out May 15, 2012 from Rhino, the CD/DVD set will be available at retail outlets, including Pantera.com and Rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $19.98. A version of the release will also be available digitally.

Along with the unreleased song, "Vulgar Display Of Power (Deluxe Edition)" also features unreleased video of the quartet performing six songs at the Monsters Of Rock show in Reggio Emilia, Italy on September 12, 1992. The set list draws almost exclusively from "Vulgar" ("This Love", "Rise", "Mouth For War"), but also includes the title track from their previous album, "Cowboys From Hell", and a melding of "Vulgar"'s "Hollow" and "Cowboys"' "Domination", which was a live staple of the band. Video of PANTERA performing live during this era is extremely rare, making the DVD one of the few ways to see them in their prime.

POISON singer Bret Michaels recently spoke to AZCentral.com about his forthcoming solo album, "Get Your Rock On", which is tentatively due this summer.

"[It's a] really amazing record," Bret said. "I put a lot of hard work into this. And everyone that's on it, I'm not only friends with but fans of. I've got Ace Frehley from KISS and Michael Anthony from VAN HALEN. I redid [POISON's] 'Nothin' But a Good Time' and played everything on it but the lead guitar and bass. Ace Frehley plays the solo and Michael Anthony plays bass. Then, 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' has Joe Perry from AEROSMITH and Hugh McDonald from BON JOVI. And it's got Loretta Lynn singing it with me. Then, Jimmy Buffett, me and him did 'Margaritaville' live. . . It's all people I know. Vinnie Paul from PANTERA. They're all friends of mine. The best one — are you ready for this? — I remade 'Sweet Home Alabama' with the guys from LYNYRD SKYNYRD playing and singing on it. Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke are on it. I wanted them to hear what I had done. I gave it a really cool feel. And they were like, 'This is awesome.'"

When asked how the sound of his new solo album compares with that of 2010's "Custom Built", Bret said, "For me, honestly, every song has a life of its own. I kind of do exactly what I want to do with each song. And so some of them are like 'Get Your Rock On', real just in-your-face straight-up rock and roll. And then, you've got a really interesting twist to 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn'. What adds the sound to your record is when you get different musicians like that. I mean, having Ace Frehley, there's just no way to describe. It almost takes you back to 'Shock Me'.

O dia era 8 de dezembro de 2004, haveria uma apresentação do Damageplan banda nova de Dime e seu irmão Vinnie Paul formada depois do fim do Pantera, no Alrosa Villa.

Os fãs estavam reunidos e o show começou, alguns minutos depois uma pessoa portando uma arma atirou em Dime e em outras tantas pessoas que estavam no local. Além de Dime outras 3 pessoas morreram naquela noite e 11 saíram feridas.

As fontes divergem contra o motivo pelo qual o crime foi cometido, alguns afirmam que o assassino gritou “Você acabou com o Pantera”, em uma entrevista, Vinnie disse que o assassino não gritou nada apenas chegou e atirou.

Ninguém que estava no local acreditou, muitos ficaram sem reação, após atirar diversas vezes,em várias pessoas e manter alguns reféns, o assassino Nathan Gale foi morto por um policial que entrou pela parte de trás do prédio.

Alguns diziam que ele tinha problemas mentais e era um grande fã do Pantera, o fato é, nunca saberemos o real motivo do assassinato, o que podemos fazer é apenas apreciar o legado musical deixado por esse grande guitarrista.

The "Behind the Music" episode on PANTERA had its premiere in May 2006. The program included interviews with the surviving members of PANTERA — Anselmo, Vinnie Paul Abbott (drums), and Rex Brown (bass) — along with appearances by Guy Sykes (tour manager), Walter O'Brien (manager), Terry Date (producer), about five members of PANTERA's/DAMAGEPLAN's crew, and Rita Haney ("Dimebag" Darrell Abbott's girlfriend).

When asked by Revolver TV during an October 2010 interview (see video above) what he thought of the show, Anselmo replied, "I thought it was biased. That had nothing to do with PANTERA; it had everything to do with the darkest chapter [in the band's history]."

He continued, "PANTERA was a bristling, fantastic, big fucking thing, man. We were on top of the world whilst our entire reign of heavy metal; no one besting us. Those are some fantastic memories in there. The whole story isn't about Darrell's death [PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott was killed by a deranged fan in December 2004. — Ed.]; that's what I wanna say, man. There's a whole lot of good they seemed to leave out. And they portrayed me as this villain.

He added, "I got a phone call, I was laying in bed... That's how I found out [about Dimebag's death], man.

"Not a fucking day goes by when I don't think about PANTERA or Dimebag — probably several hundred times.

"I've got peace in my heart when it comes to PANTERA, 'cause I think of the positive things. There was a lot of positive things. The connection with the audience. A very unique thing, PANTERA fans. Very, very, very staunch, stubborn and loyal as dogs, for god's sake, and us to them, too. 'Cause we were just music fans; we were fans of music. I'm still a music-trading fool."

Traduza\\ PHILIP ANSELMO To Perform At Tomorrow's 'Dimebash 2010' Event?

Artisan News Service spoke with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King last week about his appearance at Dimebash 2010 — in honor of the late, great "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) — on October 29 at the world-famous Key Club on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California.

"Rita's [Haney, Dimebag's longtime girlfriend] busting my balls to do it, and I told her I would if she got me a real singer," Kerry said. "'Cause you never know who's gonna show up. So she goes, 'Phil Anselmo [PANTERA, DOWN], Chuck Billy [TESTAMENT], Robb Flynn [MACHINE HEAD]... Are those good enough?' And I'm, like, 'Fuck, I'll do it with any one of those guys.' But I'm gonna see her tonight. I haven't committed, but I guess she committed me. [Laughs] Oh, Dave's [Lombardo, SLAYER drummer] doing it, for sure. But I'm pretty sure I'll do it."

Kerry told Artisan News Service that he had a close friendship with Dimebag that stretched all the way back to before PANTERA's "Cowboys From Hell" album came out.

"I was pretty close with Dime," King said. "A lot of people say they were, but I think I was as close as anybody in the [music business] except people in his band. I've got a lot of history with PANTERA. Before 'Cowboys' came out, I went out there and played on stage in Dallas with them. We'd do PANTERA songs, SLAYER songs and PRIEST songs — all the way through to where every time they came through in the latter part of their career, if I was in town I'd go on stage and play 'Fucking Hostile' with them. And then we did the last PANTERA tour, and I'm really glad that happened. I wanted to tour with them forever; I didn't want it to be their last tour, but it worked out that way and when we were on tour on that one, every night I went out and did 'Fucking Hostile' and I did 'Goddamn Electric', 'cause I did a lead on that album."

All proceeds from Dimebash 2010 — including ticket sales, raffles, merchandise and drink specials — will benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. In addition to these charitable items, a DVD of the event will be shot and recorded for near-future release with proceeds from the disc's sales also going towards the fund.

Expect to hear plenty of the all-star lineup performing songs that influenced Dime — including those from BLACK SABBATH, SLAYER and IRON MAIDEN — to classic PANTERA tracks and much more of the music that's torn your head off and made you a believer through a "vulgar display of power!"

The all-star lineup to share the stage will include hard rock and heavy metal titans: Dave Grohl of FOO FIGHTERS; Simon Wright from DIO; Brent Smith, Zach Myers and Eric Bass of SHINEDOWN; Kerry King and Dave Lombardo of SLAYER; Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel of MACHINE HEAD; Chuck Billy from TESTAMENT; Chris Howorth and Maria Brink of IN THIS MOMENT; and many more, including some surprises that will surely nail your jaw to the floor. Entrevista\\ Pantera: "ajudamos a mudar a produção dos discos de Metal"

Você tem de entender, você um jovem insignificante, na época em que fizemos o 'Cowboys From Hell', nós gravamos ele em 1989 – sem ferramentas profissionais, truques. Mas a forma que compusemos foi tão real e as coisas vieram de uma forma tão natural que na época não pareceu tipo “Ei, é melhor encararmos essa coisa de balada porque precisamos de uma.” Foi só um riff que o Dimebag compôs e se você pensar, a introdução da música tem três minutos de duração com a parte acústica. Jason Price of Icon Vs. Icon recently conducted an interview with Philip Anselmo (DOWN, PANTERA, SUPERJOINT RITUAL, ARSON ANTHEM). A few excerpts from the chat follow.

Icon Vs. Icon: We obviously can't talk about PANTERA without talking about Dimebag Darrell's untimely passing. It has been five years and you guys are putting together this commemorative release together. It is clear that his death has had a major impact on you. Is it getting any easier for you as time passes?

Anselmo: No. As a matter of fact, in a strange way, you kinda just took the words out of my mouth and asked the right question. No. Every year gets harder. Every year, when the dates roll by it gets harder and this past year has been the hardest year of all. I think initially, the first year, two years … [pauses] I don't know how long. It was just such a shock. It is very hard to comprehend, but I get it now. I get it now. I understand. Sure, I think about what could be. Yes, I think about Dimebag every day of my life. Every waking day of my life, man. So, no. It doesn't get any easier.

Icon Vs. Icon: You have had a love/hate relationship with the "rock media" for years? What are your thoughts on that part of the industry these days and your relationship with it?

Anselmo: Well, honestly it has a whole lot to do with my attitude. I think for many, many, many years I was a wounded animal lashing out. I was making a lot of mistakes with medication, drugs and alcohol. I was just fucking … [pauses] pardon the F-bomb … but I was just fucking out of my mind and I was really lashing out. After major back surgery, and that is a heck of a struggle, to come back from that both physically and mentally, today I am in a much better place. It is like what I give is what I get back. With the press, when I would fly off at the mouth, the press would eat it alive. Good or bad. I learned that lesson a few different times after being suckered into different confrontational things via different articles or different things in magazines and whatnot. Hence my silence after Dimebag's passing. There was no way I was ready to have a microphone shoved in my face. That is why I shut myself off for a long while. I have had interviewers, not many, I have definitely had a couple that try to wind me up with questions that are designed to do just that. But hey man, it is tough to fool the ol' fat now. You can't fuck … with me.

In a recent interview with Noisecreep's "Creep Show", vocalist Philip Anselmo revealed that the door's always open for his former PANTERA bandmate and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott to come back into his life.

"He can come through that door with fifths, a handshake — any of the above — just as long as he comes, because I love the guy," Anselmo said. "I love him. I love Vince. He's a big part of my life, man. I just want to say on my end, I am an open door. I am an open door."

Anselmo remains hopeful that Vinnie Paul will one day be able to forgive him for disparaging remarks Philip made to England's Metal Hammer magazine about Vinnie's brother "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott shortly before Dimebag was murdered while performing with Vinnie in Columbus, Ohio with DAMAGEPLAN. In the meantime, he can take some consolation in knowing that Dimebag's longtime girlfriend Rita Haney has reopened the lines of communication with him.

"Rita and I met for the first time in a long time, since a lot of rocks had been thrown in my direction, and we worked things out to a good point," Anselmo said. "She had some very strong points to make, important questions to ask me; and for me it was a very tremendous night.

"Just simply put, when something that traumatic happens to a group of people there is an element of madness — and I'm not talking about anger — it's madness, man," Anselmo continued. "And in all honesty, it's real easy for me to sit here and say, 'Well, we should have all come together. It would have helped the healing process a lot quicker.'

"But I can't speak for everybody, and I'm not going to. But it was very good that we did meet again, because we are friends. And that's the truth. And I've e-mailed with her back and forth here and there. And everything's very friendly. We touched base this past December, which was good, which was healthy. I needed to. This past year was probably the toughest year without Darrell. It just keeps getting tougher and tougher."
