Enquanto o casamento temporário entre o METALLICA e Lou Reed parecia uma união bem harmoniosa, Lars Ulrich se lembra de quando as coisas ficaram um pouco agressivas. Durante uma entrevista reveladora com a Spin, o baterista relembra o dia em que Reed queria sair no braço com ele.

"Uma vez eu quis mostrar algo para ele sobre como as coisas funcionavam no mundo lá fora e ele ficou meio esquentadinho", diz Ulrich. "Ele me desafiou para uma briga, e era uma proposta meio difícil porque ele é um especialista em artes marciais e sabe manobrar bem uma espada".

"O que eu posso te dizer que sei fazer é que eu posso nadar 100 metros rasos mais rápido do que qualquer outro músico de 48 anos".

Lars Ulrich, baterista do Metallica, desabafou sobre a parceria recente da banda com o cantor e compositor Lou Reed, ex-líder do The Velvet Underground. No ano passado, os dois artistas se uniram para lançar o criticado álbum Lulu, recebido com muito rancor pelos fãs do quarteto de heavy metal.

"[A reação dos fãs] foi muito mais maldosa do que esperávamos", disse Ulrich à revista Spin. "Especialmente contra o Lou. Ele é um homem tão gentil. Mas quando o Metallica joga riffs impulsivos enquanto Lou Reed declama poesia alemã abstrata de 150 anos atrás, pode ser difícil de aceitar", ironizou.

Lars ainda disse que nunca pensou duas vezes sobre a parceria com Lou Reed, especialmente quando o vocalista sugeriu letras como "eu engulo a sua lâmina mais afiada / assim como o pinto de um homem de cor" [na faixa Pumping Blood].

"Eu entendo que para um jovem de 13 anos do [estado americano] Missouri, isso tudo pode causar arrepios, mas para alguém que cresceu na comunidade artística da Dinamarca nos anos 60, é normal", disse.

Em junho, o Metallica volta à estrada em turnê especial de comemoração aos 21 anos de Metallica, o quinto álbum da banda e maior sucesso de vendas do grupo até hoje.

Pe Lanza, 19 anos, vocalista do Restart, e a apresentadora Ellen Jabour, 33, ficaram na última noite do SWU nesta segunda, 15. Aos beijos e abraços, o casal curtiu o show de Stone Temple Pilots e Alice in Chains na área VIP do festival realizado em Paulínia, interior de São Paulo.

Pe e Ellen chegaram juntos ao SWU acompanhados por uma turma de amigos por volta das 20h. Na entrada, o músico foi parado na catraca e teve que mostrar seu RG para provar a maioridade. Na hora, até comentou o contratempo: “Os caras acham que sou criança. Mas já estou acostumado, na balada é assim também.”

Após se identificar, Pe guardou o documento, trocou algumas palavras com Ellen, parou para ser fotografado e falar com o EGO – disse inclusive que estava solteiro e queria curtir – e entrou atrás de sua turma.

Durante os shows que se seguiram, Pe e Ellen não se desgrudaram. Conversaram muito, curtiram as atrações, tomaram muita cerveja e chuva e se beijaram e abraçaram muito.

Lou Reed and METALLICA tapped award-winning director Darren Aronofsky to helm a music video for their collaborative track "The View". The clip, which features scenes that were shot in the San Francisco Bay Area, can be seen below (courtesy of IFC.com). Also involved with the project as director of photography is Aronofsky's cameraman, Matthew Libatique, who has worked on all of Aronofsky's feature releases — which include such Oscar-nominated films as "Black Swan" and "The Wrestler" — and has been a cinematographer for several Spike Lee films.

Although the original plan was to shoot a performance video of "Iced Honey", when Darren got together with Lou and METALLICA at the band's San Rafael studio, it became obvious "The View" was the way to go.

"The first time I heard 'The View', I was stunned," said Aronofsky. "I had never heard anything like it. Half was all Lou. The other half all METALLICA. It was a marriage that on the surface made no sense, but the fusion changed the way I thought about both artists and morphed into something completely fresh and new. I couldn't stop listening to it. Lou's crushing lyrics, and the band's incredible licks. It's so original and that's why I wanted to work on it."

"I am very excited about working with Darren Aronofsky on our powerful video, 'The View'," said Reed. "I feel Darren understood the power and range of the emotions fueled by the fire of METALLICA. His strength and spirit are on display in every frame and I think he has caught the anger, rage and anguish at the bottom of the soul of real rock. A literate man for a literate song. "The View" is featured on METALLICA's collaborative album with Lou Reed, titled "Lulu", which has polarized fans around the world and earned the band some of the most scathing reviews of its career. The effort features the former THE VELVET UNDERGROUND frontman's spoken-word poetry and lyrics combined with METALLICA's musical assault for a jarring experience that doesn't sound like anything METALLICA has ever attempted before. A concept album based on two early 20th century plays by German author Frank Wedekind, the CD was co-produced by Reed, METALLICA, Hal Willner — who has produced albums for Reed, Marianne Faithfull, and Laurie Anderson, among others — and Greg Fidelman. Fidelman also mixed the record.

So, do such bad reviews affect the heavy-metal veterans? Lars Ulrich tells the Hindustan Times, "We have read a lot of reviews. They were quite interesting, as people haven't focused on what the album really is." Vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield adds, "Anyway the album is very special to us and we had a fantastic experience recording it."

The collaboration between METALLICA and Reed was sparked by their performance together of Reed's "Sweet Jane" and "White Light/White Heat" at the 25th anniversary of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009.

The songs were all written by Reed with extensive arrangement contributions by METALLICA.

Only two songs on the album are under five minutes in length, while two are more than 11 minutes long and the closing cut, "Junior Dad", clocks in at 19 minutes.

"Lulu" sold just under 1,400 copies copies in the United States in its fourth week of release, bringing the CD's cumulative sales to 20,000. The effort dropped off The Billboard 200 chart after debuting at position No. 36 with first-week sales of 13,000.

Oh, na última turnê. Fizemos um show em Tampa e alguns de nós dirigimos de volta para Orlando a noite porque iríamos tocar lá no dia seguinte e ouvimos mais do mesmo. Nós ficávamos apenas como, "Que porra é essa?" É tão estranho. Eu vi alguns vídeos dele ao vivo e eu não sei, cara. Se esses caras são felizes fazendo aquilo, então mais poder a eles, porque eles ainda são a minha banda favorita, mas isto é realmente estranho e eu acho que todo mundo acha isso também."

Ainda sobrou tempo para falar sobre a reação dos fãs da banda. “Eles estão ameaçando me matar, só porque eu fiz isso. Nem ouviram o disco e já recomendam várias formas de tortura e morte. Hetfield: "Well, at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, we jammed with him on the 25th-year anniversary, and after the playing, he felt so good, he felt so alive that backstage there were some friends of his coming up to us and saying, 'What did you do to him? We've never seen him smile so much.' And then he just yelled down the hallway as we were leaving, 'We should do a record together.' And we thought, 'Yeah, right. Is he talking to us?' [Laughs] But he was serious. He had told us that we're the band he always wanted to have. And I agreed — METALLICA is the band I always wanted to have as well. [Laughs]"

On some METALLICA fans' concern that the band's collaborative album with Lou Reed, "Lulu", will sound nothing like the METALLICA they know and love:

Hetfield: "It's definitely different. This is not the new METALLICA studio record. This is 'Lulu'. And that's why we named it 'Lulu' — it's not METALLICA [and] it's not Lou Reed; it's us together making something called 'Lulu'. I'm sure there's some METALLICA fans that will think that 'This is the new METALLICA record. I don't like it. I'm scared.' And it's not. This is a project that was presented to us that we wanted to challenge ourselves with. I mean, there's some great riffs on there. There's not a lot of singing from me on it. [It's] Lou and his lyrics, with us writing background music for Lou. So that's what we did. There will be fans that it will be difficult for them to understand, but we can't stop being METALLICA, we can't stop exploring what we wanna do as an artist. We don't like limiting ourselves. But we're not doing it just to mess with the fans; that's for sure. If they don't like it, wait until the next record where we're fully focused on METALLICA, which we're actually writing right now."

On METALLICA lead guitarist Kirk Hammett's recent revelation that he and Hetfield were both brought to tears during the sessions for "Lulu" while they were recording a song called "Junior Dad":

Hetfield: "[Kidding around] Yeah, Lou, he dropped his guitar on my foot and I started crying. [Gets serious] No… It was just a moment. When music moves you in a certain way, and I was totally shocked by it. Lou came out and said, 'Oh my God, you two have to listen to this.' And [I was like], 'Yeah yeah yeah, I'll be in there in a minute. I'm eating.' And then I went in and we started listening and, you know, tears started and I couldn't stop them. It was like, 'Oh my God. I have to leave.' I had to leave. Somebody came up to me and said, 'James, you've gotta come to Kirk. He's…' 'Oh, you too.' It hit us, man. That was a sign that it was the right thing to do."

On whether there are any plans for METALLICA and Lou Reed to take their collaboration on the road:

Hetfield: "We would love to do some shows — I don't know how many, I don't know where. How many can we do together? It doesn't need to be 20 shows and it doesn't need to be one show — somewhere in the middle there, I think, to give everyone a taste of it and just see what it's like. It's an intense record and Lou has stated that he doesn't know if he can do the whole thing. But I think he will and I think he certainly can. It's a very unique concept — it's not a METALLICA concert; it's not anthem rock whatsoever. This is kind of lonely... It's like one-person music, in a way… for me. I don't need to listen to it with other people; it distracts me, actually. I like listening to it by myself. So it will be probably small, dark places. [Laughs] Like my mind. [Laughs]"

Segundo as autoridades britânicas, a alegação para banir os cartazes, que reproduzem a imagem da capa do CD, é que ela é “muito parecida com grafite”.

“Eu tinha perdido meu pai três ou quatro semanas antes. Tive que sair da sala de controle do estúdio e fui para a cozinha chorando. Pouco depois, James Hetfield (N.R.: que foi abandonado pelo pai aos 13 anos) entra lá, no mesmo estado. Foi algo insano”.

O grupo escreveu em um comunicado: "Nós estamos mais do que orgulhosos de anunciar que acabamos de completar a gravação de um álbum, que será uma colaboração com ninguém menos que o lendário Lou Reed.
