Premiere\\ SAXON: 'Sacrifice' Video Released

The official video for "Sacrifice", the title track of the new album from British heavy metal legends SAXON, can be seen below.

"Sacrifice" will now be released on March 1 in Europe (except in the U.K., where it will be made available on March 4) and March 26 in North America through UDR. Taking a sharper, reinvigorated approach to the production, on this, their 20th album, SAXON have produced 10 of their strongest, heaviest and most inspired songs for many-a-year, and a more than worthy successor to their last album "A Call To Arms".

"Less tricks, more power!" roars frontman and founding father Biff Byford. "My brief to the band was to be raw, be real and not be afraid to look back at the old classic material for inspiration."

The album was recorded at LS Studios in Yorkshire and was produced by Byford, with Andy Sneap mixing and engineering by Jacky Lehmann. It fairly bristles with muscular metallic intent, Paul Quinn's and Doug Scarratt's guitar work the best it's ever been, while Biff's vocals sound fresher and livelier. The songwriting too harks back to a classic era in SAXON's history, with the likes of "Warriors Of The Road", "Wheels Of Terror" and "Stand Up And Fight" evoking the halcyon days of yore with a contemporary twist, the classic SAXON sound absorbing the snarl, ferocity and attitude of contemporary bands (and fans) such as MEGADETH, as evidenced by the crunching title cut, "Sacrifice".

"It's certainly been done from a more early '80s thrashier perspective," explains Biff, "and it's not just guitars bashing away willy-nilly, they've got a fresh drive, purpose and perspective."

Besides the new material, SAXON will also be adding some unique recordings of revisited classic to certain formats of the release, also produced by Byford and mastered by Andy Sneap, including an orchestrated version of "Crusader" and an acoustic version of "Frozen Rainbow".

"From the songs to the production, I wanted to focus on the raw aspects which made us great in the first place," concludes Biff, "And living in that rawness, combined with some great classic SAXON songwriting, has in my opinion made SAXON fresher than ever."

Vocalist Biff Byford of British heavy metal legends SAXON flew from Helsinki to San Francisco earlier this week to join METALLICA on stage for the first of four intimate shows at the 1,200-capacity Fillmore in San Francisco as part of the week-long celebration of its 30th anniversary as a band for fan club members only. Byford couldn’t miss the chance to celebrate such a milestone in METALLICA's career, and took advantage of a two days gap in SAXON's current tour to make the event. The iconic British metal vocalist performed the SAXON classic "Motorcycle Man" at the Fillmore with METALLICA on December 5.

After opening sets from THE SOUL REBELS brass band and Finnish cello rockers APOCALYPTICA, as well as a salute to Ray Burton, the 86-year-old father of late METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton, by the event's MC, Jim Breuer (comedian, SiriusXM host and diehard METALLICA fan), METALLICA rocked the capacity crowd with a 21-song set which featured selections from all periods of the band's career, including a previously unreleased track from the "Death Magnetic" sessions called "Hate Train".

Frontman James Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio that METALLICA hoped to make the shows special for the people attending. "It is a fan celebration — everyone who's come along the METALLICA ride for 30 years — and we're constantly wanting to give to the fans what they don't normally get from some other band or some other connection," he said. "So these four shows at the Fillmore are something like that."

The other three shows will take place on December 7, December 9, and December 10, with special guests and events, rare songs, varied set lists and more.

Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio that he hoped Ozzy Osbourne and MOTÖRHEAD bassist/singer Lemmy Kilmister would be among the guests at the shows.

METALLICA plans to begin work on its next studio album early in 2012. The group recently released its collaborative album with Lou Reed, called "Lulu", which flopped saleswise and earned the quartet the worst reviews of its career.

The band has booked several European shows next summer, including one at a venue in Denmark that used to be a prison, at which it will perform its self-titled 1991 effort, a.k.a. "the black album," in its entirety.

METALLICA was formed when Ulrich, who had moved to Los Angeles from Denmark, placed an ad in a local paper called The Recycler looking for other musicians to play with. The ad was answered by guitarists James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner of the band LEATHER CHARM.

METALLICA officially formed in October 1981 and the band's first recording was "Hit The Lights" for the compilation "Metal Massacre".

Bay Area DJ Ron Quintana came up with the group's name: he was debating between using "Metallica" and "Metal Mania" for the name of his radio show and Ulrich encouraged him to use "Metal Mania" so that he could use "Metallica" for his new band.

METALLICA's first full lineup — featuring Hetfield, Ulrich, guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney — played its first gig on March 14, 1982 at Radio City in Anaheim, California.

Enquanto algumas bandas parecem entrar no palco já querendo sair, outras seguem na direção contrária e, às vezes, precisam ser tiradas dele por conta do entusiasmo em tocar frente ao seu público. Com o grupo britânico SAXON é exatamente assim. Quem não se lembra das hilárias histórias envolvendo a banda em festivais, quando tinham o som desligado por ultrapassar o tempo limite? No Brasil nunca foi diferente e, mesmo não precisando ter os instrumentos desplugados em nosso país, sempre realizaram concertos longos e cheios de clássicos irretocáveis. O HSBC Brasil recebeu no último sábado o quinteto e, com todo respeito, creio que a casa levará um tempinho para superar um show bom assim.

São 19 álbuns de estúdio lançados e a tarefa ingrata de montar um repertório que agrade, pelo menos, a maioria. Desta vez escolheram 24 canções de 10 discos. Como bons britânicos, entraram pontualíssimos às 22h mandando “Hammer of the Gods”, uma das seis (!)tocadas do mais recente Call to Arms (2011). As duas seguintes foram até covardia, ou seria possível ficar imune aos hinos “Heavy Metal Thunder” e “Never Surrender”, dos essenciais Strong Arm of the Law (1980) e Denim and Leather (1981), respectivamente? Retornaram discretamente ao novo com as interessantes “Chasing the Bullet” e a balada "Back in ’79" com seu refrão grudento, intercalaram com duas outras das antigas, “Motorcycle Man” e a fenomenal “And the Bands Played On”, para então retomarem ao Call to Arms com minha favorita dele, a belíssima “Mists of Avalon”. Esta música nos remete à fase mais hard rock da banda, felizmente lembrada no set como observaremos mais adiante. Pessoalmente acho muito legal a disposição da letra com as melodias vocais criadas por Byff Byford, quando canta “(…) In the mists of Avalon/ She's waiting there for you/ The Lady of the Lake/ You must be brave and true (…)”.

O Saxon modificou um pouco a disposição das canções com relação às duas apresentações anteriores. Um exemplo disso deve-se à inclusão de “Demon Sweeney Todd”, do Into the Labyrinth (2009), perfeita escolha àquela altura por conta da estrutura old-school com que compuseram boa parte do track-listing daquele registro. Quem se ligou na letra certamente transportou-se a Londres e sentiu o clima sombrio gerado pela narrativa. A ótima faixa-título do derradeiro disco não só manteve a plateia empolgada como conectou-se perfeitamente com “Dallas 1 PM”, uma das favoritas de 10 entre 10 fãs dos ingleses. Impressionante como algo composto há mais 30 anos soa tão moderno!

“Rock ‘n’ Roll Gypsy” talvez tenha sido a grande (e agradabilíssima) surpresa, carregada da já citada atmosfera hard rock com que flertaram em meados da década de 80. Tenho os álbuns Innocence Is No Excuse (1985), Rock the Nations (1986) e Destiny (1988) como alguns dos meus favoritos e, mesmo sabendo que diversos fãs irão discordar, sempre achei uma injustiça não incluírem mais faixas deles nas turnês. Se leram meus pensamentos não sei, mas a sequencia deliciosa com “Rock the Nations” – a música – e “Battle Cry” (emocionante!) certamente me fizeram calar a boca, fechar os olhos e imaginar aqueles concertos em arenas gigantescas tão concorridos nos anos oitenta. Byff inclusive chegou a relembrar a data histórica de 16 de agosto de 1980, quando tocaram ao lado de Scorpions, Rainbow, Riot, Judas Priest, dentre outros, naquele que foi por anos o mais importante festival do mundo: o Monsters of Rock, em Castle Donnington, Inglaterra.

De volta ao novo com a mediana “When Doomsday Comes (Hybrid Theory)”, a partir dali seriam apenas um clássico após o outro, em uma coleção primorosa que trouxe, nesta exata ordem – e intercalada por dois encores – as atemporais “Denim and Leather” e “20,000 Ft.”; as quebra-pescoços “Wheels of Steel”, “Crusader” e “747 (Strangers in the Night)”; além dos hits irremediavelmente inesquecíveis “Power and the Glory”, do homônimo lançado em 1983 e “Ride Like the Wind”, versão melhorada da original pertencente ao compositor norte-americano Christopher Cross.

Como se já não fossem suficientes, após um solo de baixo bacana do impagável Nibbs Carter, ainda nos brindaram com “Strong Arm of the Law” e aquela que para quem vos escreve define a banda se precisarmos escolher apenas uma de suas criações: “Princess of the Night”. Se naquele momento ainda restavam dúvidas de que estávamos ali diante de um dos melhores shows do ano, era hora de ajoelhar e reverenciar um dos mais importantes nomes do que se convencionou denominar NWOBHM. Em tempo, além de Byff e Carter, completam o Saxon o excepcional baterista Nigel Glockler e os guitarristas Paul Quinn e Doug Scarratt.

A produtora Negri Concerts confirmou três apresentações da banda inglesa de heavy metal Saxon no Brasil em 2011.

Formada em 1976, a veterana banda retorna à América do Sul em outubro para shows nas seguintes cidades:

18/10 - Santiago, Chile (New Rockola)
20/10 - Rio de Janeiro, Brasil (Ilha dos Pescadores)
22/10 - São Paulo, Brasil (HSBC Brasil)
23/10 - Curitiba, Brasil (Master Hall)
25/10 - Buenos Aires, Argentina (El Teatro Flores)

Rocknews\\ Saxon: grupo vai experimentar o formato com orquestra

E mais uma banda de Heavy Metal vai aderir às apresentações com orquestras. Dessa vez é o SAXON, que no ano que vem tocará com a Orquestra Filarmônica Polonesa, como confirmou o vocalista Biff Byford.

“O cara que comanda a orquestra nos convidou. Temos várias canções que se encaixam na proposta, como ‘Call To Arms’, do novo disco. Fizemos ‘Crusader’ nesse formato e soou fantástica. Então, será algo meio acústico, meio orquestrado e Heavy Metal também. Filmaremos o show e o making of. Não sabemos a data exata, mas já estamos trabalhando nisso, pois é um pesadelo de logística”.

A Impostora \\ Saxon: Biff Byford confraterniza com Lady Gaga

O frontman do SAXON, Biff Byford, encontrou Lady Gaga nos bastidores de recente show da cantora na Inglaterra. O próprio contou o acontecido no site da banda:



“Comprei os ingressos para ir com minha filha, mas ela acabou não podendo. Então fui com nosso agente, Steve. Ao entrarmos no backstage, encontramos o manager da DJ de Heavy Metal, Lady Starlight, além de membros da banda de abertura, Semi-Precious Weapons. Eles nos convidaram para tomar um drinque no camarim. O show foi ótimo. Após a apresentação, voltamos para outra rodada e, de repente, Lady Starlight veio e disse que Lady Gaga gostaria de nos conhecer. Passamos 50 fantásticos minutos com ela, que é uma grande fã do SAXON e de Heavy Rock em geral. Ela é demais e foi um grande privilégio conhecê-la”.

Sweden Rock Festival \\ SAXON To Celebrate 'Denim And Leather' 30th Anniversary At SWEDEN

British heavy metal legends SAXON have been confirmed for next year's edition of the Sweden Rock Festival, set to take place June 8-11, 2011 in Sölvesborg in southern Sweden. The band will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its classic album "Denim And Leather" by performing it in its entirety at the event, "spiced with a lot of other immortal SAXON classics and yes, they will bring the eagle!"
