Korn
On this week’s Metal Hammer podcast, we had a bit of a natter about how Korn had the
bum spot of the weekend. Sandwiched in between the comebacks of Limp Bizkit and
Faith No More, there was a sizeable chance that Korn would be eaten by those bands but they completely held their own.
Bags of energy and throwing out a greatest hits set, Davies and the boys provided a vibe that was much darker and less ‘good-time’, but heavy as fuck.
Korn have had a love affair with Donington since their breakthrough performance in 1996. Today, that love affair continued and then some.
Motley Crue
Opening with ‘Kickstart My Heart’, Crue really should be hitting the ground running but it takes a few songs for the band to really find their feet. Don’t get us wrong, the band are on very good form tonight and ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’, ‘Dr Feelgood’ et al are perfect for festivals but a mixture of a lethargic crowd and extended chatting to the crowd just means Motley never quite get the same swagger they showed during their festival-stealing set in 2007.
It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t what this band are capable of.
Faith No More
To put it into context, Faith No More were even better tonight than at Brixton on Wednesday. Opening with the reunited cover again, the band’s decision to throw in a very, VERY fast ‘Introduce Yourself’, a mountainous ‘Ashes To Ashes’ and end on a fist-throwing ‘We Care A Lot’, was inspired.
The only way to describe this awesome, awe-inspiring set is that it’s everything that it threatened to be. Patton’s voice was out of this world, there was barmy and brilliant in equal measure, the sound was impeccable…quite honestly, the gauntlet has been thrown down for festival season. Limp Bizkit were phenomenal, FNM were even better and tonight sees Slipknot take the stage.
Is this going to be the best Download ever? It’s certainly started that way.
