Aaron Yoxheimer of The Morning Call recently conducted an interview with guitarist/vocalist Matt Heafy of Florida metallers TRIVIUM. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On being compared to METALLICA and other bands TRIVIUM has cited as influences:
"For a little while, it seemed like people either hated us or loved us. We were fine with that because we knew that was going to happen, but lately we've been hearing from a lot of people who were like, 'I used to hate you 'till I saw you live, and now I'm converted.'
"People tried to say 'Oh, you're part of this thing or that thing' to pigeonhole us. When we did 'The Crusade', people had already associated us with those bands that were doing the same thing, and we showed them that we do our own thing. 'The Crusade' was different from what we normally do and some fans left us. When I heard about those people I was like, 'Well, if you're going to leave us over an experiment anyway, then what's the point of liking our band?' We're about our true devoted fans."
On the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival:
"It's amazing. It's without a doubt the best festival tour we've ever done in the U.S., and we've done pretty much all of them. Every single day has been a highlight. We knew the reaction [to us] would be good, but we had no idea it'd be this good. Word is even going out beyond this tour; we're hearing from management and the label that the shows are going really well for the band."
On taking part in the 2005 edition of Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne's traveling fest, Ozzfest, when members of Sharon Osbourne's crew, reportedly at her behest, threw eggs at IRON MAIDEN:
"As soon as that happened, every single day for the rest of Ozzfest we wore IRON MAIDEN shirts and played [MAIDEN's] 'The Trooper' at every show and said 'Hail IRON MAIDEN' from the stage,. And after that, I started hearing word that we're not allowed to play Ozzfest and we have to apologize for this and that, and we were like [screw] that."
On the band's live performances:
"We just want to see smiles. It sounds cheesy, but it's true. I want to see people having a good time. It's just about escaping life for that 30 minutes or that 90 minutes and sharing your common bond with that mass of people."
